Our Story

Bringing back an iconic piece of mid-century architecture, one handcrafted block at a time

The History of Breeze-Way Blocks

Breeze-way blocks, also known as decorative concrete blocks or screen blocks, were a defining feature of mid-century modern architecture during the 1960s and 1970s. These perforated concrete blocks served both functional and aesthetic purposes, allowing air circulation and natural light while maintaining privacy.

The peace-sign design became one of the most iconic patterns of the era, symbolizing the cultural movements of the time. These blocks adorned everything from residential homes to commercial buildings, becoming a signature element of Southern California architecture and spreading across the country.

As architectural trends shifted, production of these distinctive blocks largely ceased by the 1980s. Original blocks became increasingly rare and sought-after by architects, designers, and homeowners looking to restore or recreate authentic mid-century spaces.

"Breeze-way blocks weren't just functional—they were art. Each pattern told a story of its era, combining craftsmanship with the optimistic, forward-thinking spirit of mid-century design."

The Decoblok Revival

Decoblok was born from a passion for mid-century architecture and a frustration with the scarcity of authentic breeze-way blocks. What started as a personal project to source blocks for a home renovation evolved into a mission to make these iconic pieces accessible again.

Through meticulous research, we tracked down original blocks and carefully documented their specifications—dimensions, patterns, concrete mixes, and finishing techniques. Our goal was simple: create reproductions so authentic that they would be indistinguishable from the originals.

Today, Decoblok operates as a small-batch, homebrew operation. Each block is handcrafted using traditional methods and high-quality materials. We don't mass-produce—we focus on quality, authenticity, and serving a discerning audience of architects, designers, and enthusiasts who appreciate true craftsmanship.

Our Approach

Authenticity

We use original specifications and period-appropriate techniques to ensure every block is a true reproduction, not an interpretation.
